Dos and don'ts... at the end of the tenancy
Navigating the end of a tenancy can be smoother with a clear understanding of your responsibilities.
Our guide outlines essential do's and don'ts for tenants to ensure a successful and trouble-free transition when moving out.
Whether you’re an experienced renter or new to the process, your tenancy agreement is legally binding, emphasising the importance of knowing your responsibilities from the start. Adhering to these guidelines will help you maintain a positive tenancy experience and prevent potential claims for costs down the line.
Do’s
- Pay your rent up to the agreed last date of the tenancy
- Refer to the inventory provided when you moved in to understand the condition and cleanliness standards for returning the property
- Notify utility companies, council tax office, and service providers of your move-out date and meter readings
- Clear out all belongings by the agreed move-out date and time
- Attend the check-out inspection to address any discrepancies
- If applicable, wait 10 days after moving out before requesting a security deposit refund
- Be open to negotiating proposed deductions and claims in a reasonable manner
Don’ts
- Leave unlisted items in the property, as removal charges may apply
- Leave the property in a damaged or unclean state, as this may result in additional charges
- Leave the garden in a worse condition than when you moved in
- Allow utility and services disconnections by asking for your account to be on ‘stop’
- Don’t forget to return all keys, including any duplicates, that were issued during the tenancy
By adhering to these do’s and don’ts, tenants can smoothly navigate the end of their tenancy, avoiding disputes and ensuring a harmonious relationship with their landlords. These guidelines are designed to help in a hassle-free transition and for tenants and landlords to maintain a positive rental experience.
